Robin van Persie has been transfer listed by Manchester United as the Red Devils attempt to sell the Dutch striker before the start of the new season.
This is according to Jamie Jackson, the Guardian’s Manchester-based football reporter, who told talkSPORT on Monday that the 31-year-old could complete a move to Fenerbahce this summer.
Jackson published a story in the Guardian on Saturday claiming Van Persie had agreed personal terms with the Turkish club, but seemed to backtrack on that slightly during his conversation on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show this morning.
"Robin van Persie is for sale," Jackson confirmed. "With regard to the Fenerbahce story, let's just wait and see. It could be a timing thing. There could be money issues in and around that [deal].
"Can they pay Van Persie what he's getting at United? It's nearly £250,000-a-week. Let's just see on that one."
Van Persie to join Nani at Fenerbahce?
It’s understood that Van Persie has warmed to the idea of joining Fenerbahce, who announced the signing of former Manchester United star Nani earlier today, after spending last week with his wife in Istanbul.
However, Manchester United and Fenerbahce are yet to come to an agreement over a transfer fee - although it’s not expected that the Red Devils will demand a huge amount of money for a player who has failed to shine on a consistent basis since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford in the summer of 2013.
United fans expected to see the real Van Persie after Louis van Gaal replaced David Moyes as manager last summer.
The former Arsenal captain was filmed excitedly telling a reporter “Manchester United will be back” after reports suggested Van Gaal was on the brink of being appointed.
But a combination of poor form and injuries limited Van Persie to 29 appearances in all competitions for United last season - he only made 28 in the previous campaign - and he finished 2014-15 with a disappointing 10 goals to his name.
Man United unlikely to offer Van Persie new deal
Van Persie has now entered the final 12 months of his contract and Manchester United appear to have little interest in offering him a new deal.
Furthermore, if he does decide to stay he can expect to spend much of next season on the bench, with Wayne Rooney now the club’s undisputed first-choice striker.
But with Radamel Falcao and Angelo Henriquez gone, and Javier Hernandez almost certain to join them this summer, Van Gaal is short in the striker department.
There’s talk James Wilson could also leave the club on loan, so Van Gaal may look to bring in at least two more strikers regardless of whether Van Persie stays or leaves the club this summer.
