Manchester United and Bayern Munich will not enter negotiations for a swap-deal that would see Angel Di Maria and Thomas Muller trade places this summer, but there may well be a huge deal on the cards between the two sides.
According to popular German newspaper Bild - via their chief sports reporter Christian Falk - building on reports suggesting United have contacted their Bavarian counterparts about the possibility of signing Muller in the coming weeks, young Mario Gotze has been discussed, with an emphasis on a potential transfer that would see Di Maria head the other way.
As one would expect it’s all very vague at the moment - not least because of translations that can oh so easily be misinterpreted - but it appears as though Bild are of a degree of the belief that what would be one of the biggest deals this summer may yet come to pass.

No Muller deal
To start with the paper deny reports that Muller would be Bayern’s offering as they attempt to lure Di Maria to the Allianz Arena, despite strong indications yesterday suggesting that the German had fallen out with Pep Guardiola.
A training ground dispute on Monday was said to have heated tensions, but the latest rumour is that Bayern won’t even entertain the idea of letting him go.

Di Maria move possible?
Meanwhile United are thought to be holding out for at least €50million if they are to dispense of Di Maria’s services only a year after shelling out £59.7m to buy him from Real Madrid. It’s feasible that the figures are right, even if the idea that Louis van Gaal isn’t happy with him is a little far-fetched.
In any case Bayern reportedly don’t want to spend €50m on Di Maria, but they might be more inclined to consider a swap deal including a player who wasn’t really at the races last season. Enter Gotze.
Gotze the replacement
The Germany World Cup hero had the world at his feet this time last year but struggled to be recognised as a key player in Guardiola’s setup during the 2014/15 campaign.
He was a regular enough face in the side but was omitted on several occasions for big matches, with his agent recently airing frustrations over the support he’s been shown.
Hence the foundations for a rumour as fantastical as any you will see this summer. Could it be that Van Gaal will really swap Di Maria for Gotze? Only time will tell.
United fans, do you think Di Maria for Gotze would be a fair trade? Would you do it if you were in control? Let us know in the comments box below.
