Cristiano Ronaldo's move to central forward is a masterstroke from Real Madrid

Rafa Benitez is set to use Real Madrid talisman and current Ballon d'Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo in a central striking position next season, with the positional change potentially spelling the end for current frontman Karim Benzema.

Over the last few campaigns Ronaldo's style of play has noticeably changed. No longer are we seeing a tricky winger producing spectacular goals, what we are seeing now is one of the game’s most complete centre-forwards.

Ronaldo adaption

It is common knowledge that Ronaldo's goals-to-game ratio at Real is something that will be marvelled at for years to come. He is simply a true goal machine, and one that doesn't seem intent on stopping.

Since his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu he has most commonly operated in a left-wing position, but now it seems the Portuguese star needs to be the focal point of the attack.

Move to centre-forward

His work ethic on the wing is sometimes lacklustre and it is obvious to most that he thrives on coming inside and being a menace inside the box. Last season very few of his goals came from the wide position and, despite his phenomenal scoring record, his neglect towards his positional duties are not helping Real.

He is obsessed with goals and therefore should be used in a position where goals are all that matters, as a centre forward.

His hat-trick against Sevilla at the tail end of the season was testimony to his unbelievable poaching, physical and aerial ability. 90% of his 48 La Liga goals last season came from inside the box (stat from Goal), a figure that proves he has become a different player, but one who remains as dangerous as ever.

Other benefits

His positional change might also allow Gareth Bale to take over at left-wing, his favoured position, to help support the new look Ronaldo in his duties.

Back in 2009 Real paid a world record fee for the world’s finest winger. Six years later that man has developed into the world’s finest centre-forward. As a result Benitez's plan could prove to be a stroke of genius.
