Chelsea hero Frank Lampard has revealed that he believes Petr Cech’s switch to Arsenal could come back to haunt Jose Mourinho, stating that it may bridge the gap between the Gunners and those above them.

Last season Arsene Wenger steered his side to a third place finish in the Premier League, but they were never really title hopefuls due to how well Chelsea had conducted themselves.

It was a similar story the year before, with Manchester City dominating the roost and Arsenal having to contend merely for Champions League qualification.

The game-changer?

However, Wenger’s recent purchase of Cech has been lauded by many as a potential game-changer. Arsenal have long missed the services of a world-class goalkeeper and now that they have one they could become a real threat to both Chelsea and City.

It’s certainly something that Lampard feels anyway. The ex-England international has played for both the aforesaid Premier League giants, and though he’s now going to be plying his trade for New York City FC, he thinks Cech moving to Arsenal will make a big difference.

Lampard backing

“Cech is a world-class keeper and person and can help push Arsenal into the running next season," Lampard said, as per the Daily Express.

“Arsenal weren’t a million miles away over the last few seasons.

“They are always challenging before falling just short but Cech going there, as John Terry said recently, will save them points.

“Manchester City and Chelsea will be challenging for the title once again.

“They remain favourites but Petr will make a difference.”

Chelsea mistake?

Indeed it must be said that it looks as though the Gunners will have a far better defence next season with Cech in between the sticks.

No disrespect intended to either Wojciech Szczesny or David Ospina, but neither of them instills the sort of faith that Cech does, and the veteran ‘keeper is as experienced as almost any in world football.

The fact that Mourinho was supposedly desperate to stop him linking up with a Premier League rival is testament to how he feels about the possibilities that could come of Cech’s move, with Roman Abramovich believed to have been the catalyst behind Chelsea accepting Arsenal’s offer.

Gunners could carry the torch

In any case the Special One will most probably be expecting a renewed title charge from Wenger next season, especially given how well the north London outfit fared during the last half of last term.

From the turn of the year onwards the Gunners were the in-form Premier League side, and with a couple more astute additions they could easily hit the ground running and surge into an early points lead.

Chelsea fans, do you think Mourinho will regret ever saying yes to Arsenal? Arsenal fans, is Cech going to be the difference? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
