Manchester United fans would be forgiven for thinking a deal for Torino full-back Matteo Darmian was done and dusted, but they might want to consider re-corking that champagne for the time being.
Fresh quotes offered by Goal, taken from Torino president Urbana Cairo, imply that a deal between United and their Italian counterparts hasn’t been agreed yet, despite the fact that right-back is said to be having a medical later today.
It could well transpire to be a case of Cairo intentionally ramping up the media spotlight on his club, but his comments infer that all that has been said to date regarding Darmian’s supposedly imminent switch to Old Trafford should be called into question.

"I'm very fond of Darmian," Cairo said.
"Matteo is a very important player for us. He's essential and well liked. Manchester United are a great club but there's still nothing done regarding his sale.
"Until there is something definite, I'd prefer not to speak about it officially."
Only yesterday was it reported widely that the 25-year-old would be ironing out the finite details of his transfer prior to the weekend, with supporters naturally then expecting to see him playing for the club as of their pre-season tour, which begins Monday.
Now, just three days ago did Cairo himself reveal that offers had been made for Darmian’s services, so it would be wrong to completely dismiss the speculation, but if the president of the Italian outfit is to be believed then perhaps a deal is further away than initially assumed.
This is in spite of recent comments made by Torino manager Giampiero Ventura that confirmed he was resigned to losing Darmian, with the 67-year-old stating that the Italy international was making a dream move to Old Trafford.
For United it doesn’t necessarily spell disaster, but it could prove to be the catalyst for complications as the fans are now expecting the player to sign on the dotted line sooner rather than later.
Indeed Van Gaal is certainly keen to get a deal done before too long, with it having been said that he wants the majority of his transfer business done and dusted before the pre-season tour.
Need for a right-back
What’s more the future of Rafael da Silva is looking particularly precarious. It’s been purported numerous times that Van Gaal wants to offload the Brazilian, but in order to do that he’ll need to have secured the services of an adequate replacement. See the issue potentially developing?
