CM Punk could make his debut in UFC at the end of the year

CM Punk could finally be making his UFC debut by the end of the year, nearly a year-and-a-half after leaving the WWE.

Punk, also known as Phil Brooks, has been training three times a day with former kickboxing champion Duke Roufus, at Roufusport in Milwaukee.

Punk decided to try his hand at mixed martial arts (MMA) after he felt he was being overworked and it was having affects on his health during his time in the WWE.

The day of reckoning for the 36-year-old could finally be arriving, as he aims to be ready for his first UFC fight by December or January.

Punk said this to Michael Martinez on UFC.com on Thursday during a media session at MGM Grand as part of International Fight Week.

He said: “I say this all the time: I’d love to fight tomorrow. But I want to be as prepared as I possibly can be and I will be.

"I’m still shooting for December. It might be January, I’m not sure. But I’ll be ready when I fight.”

However, the former WWE Superstar said Roufus will make the final decision on when he enters the Octagon for the first time. He said: “I don’t ask my coaches, ‘How did I do today? Am I ready?’

"They say, ‘Come back at 7’ and I come back at 7. They tell me to mop, I mop. They tell me to sweep, I sweep. If they tell me to work the mitts or come in and work extra, I do it.

“I don’t chase the hug and say, ‘Did I do good today?’ I know I’ll turn the corner eventually.”

Punk isn't complaining about the difficultly of transition from WWE to MMA, which requires fighters to be trained in a number of combat sports. He rather enjoys the challenge ahead of him.

He said: “It’s super awesome and it’s super fun. I’m a fan of knowledge, so every day for me is a good day because I’m always learning something. It’s a lot, but I know what I signed up for.”

Punk must decide which weight division he wants to fight in before making his debut. This will either be at middleweight (185 pounds) or at welterweight (170).

Many wrestlers from the WWE have made the transition from WWE to MMA and been successful. One of the main guys every knows about is Brock Lesnar.

He made his MMA debut in 2007 and got signed to UFC after one fight. He did win the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 91 against Randy Couture.

Lesnar successfully defended the championship twice before losing it to Cain Velasquez at UFC 155.

The door is definitely open for Punk to take UFC by storm, and if the likes of Lesnar can be successful then so can he. At the age of 36, how many fights he has in UFC remains to be seen.
