Van Gaal explains why he signed Darmian
Van Gaal, meanwhile, confirmed the reasons why he opted to sign Darmian, who is expected to displace both Antonio Valencia and Rafael to become Manchester United’s first-choice right-back next season.
"Matteo is a right-sided full back with the versatility of also being able to play on the left,” the United manager commented. “He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in the attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League.
"Matteo will be a great addition to the team. I am delighted to welcome Matteo to the club and look forward to working with him in the coming days."
New signings flying to United States on Monday
Darmian will now meet his new teammates before flying out to the United States with the rest of the squad on Monday.
The Italian defender could make his debut for the Red Devils on July 17, when Manchester United face Club America in Seattle.
Darmian will be joined in the States by fellow new signings Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger, while United are also hoping to complete the signing of Southampton’s French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin before they jet off on Monday.
