Franck Ribery 'very sad' to see Bastian Schweinsteiger depart

Bayern Munich legend Bastian Schweinsteiger yesterday agreed to a deal with Manchester United and his old teammates were sad to see him go.

Bayern Munich’s official YouTube channel produced a video (watch at bottom of article) from the team’s presentation at the Allianz Arena ahead of the new season and several stars had special messages for the Manchester United new boy.

Franck Ribery in particular seemed pretty choked up to see Schweinsteiger depart the club, calling him a ‘close friend’.

On Saturday Manchester United completed two deals, of which Schweinsteiger was the first. Louis van Gaal followed up the capture of the German World Cup winner with a deal to sign Torino’s full-back Matteo Darmian.

Schweinsteiger, 30, wants a new challenge, according to Bayern Munich chief executive Karl Heinz Rummenigge. The Germany star has played under van Gaal before and after an injury hit campaign last term will be looking for more first-team football at Old Trafford.

Rummenigge also admitted he was sad to lose a player of Schweinsteiger’s calibre, in an emotional press conference confirming his move to the Red Devils.

Ribery went on to say he was ‘very, very sad’ to see the midfielder go and judging by the reaction of several other Bayern players, Manchester United have themselves a very likeable and talented player on their hands.
