Manchester United are in talks with Benfica over a deal involving Rafael da Silva and Nicolas Gaitan, according to Rafael’s agent.
Cassiano Pereira, who represents the Manchester United defender, claims that Manchester United and Benfica are currently in negotiations over a deal that would involve his client moving to the Portuguese club as part of the transfer.
Pereira goes on to say that Rafael wants to join Benfica and that negotiations from his point of view should not be difficult.

It’s no surprise really that the Brazilian full-back wants to leave Old Trafford - he played just 11 matches during Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge last term and is reportedly on the transfer list as far as van Gaal is concerned.
Manchester United also just confirmed the arrival of Matteo Darmian from Torino, and the Italian international plays the same position as Rafael.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record as reported by goal.com in the UK, Cassiano Pereira said: “Benfica and Manchester United are in negotiations over Gaitan and one offer includes Rafael to join Benfica.
“Rafael wants to join Benfica. It’s a big European club. If the talks proceed, it will not be difficult to reach an agreement.”
With Darmian in, Manchester United fans won’t be concerned too much should Rafael depart. What the potential arrival of Gaitan means though, is another question entirely.
The €35m-rated (£25m) Argentinian playmaker is a talented individual but considering the current make-up of the Manchester United squad, it’s not immediately obvious where he would fit in - unless van Gaal is ready to cut his losses on Angel Di Maria.
That would be a massive shock though, having invested £60m in him last summer expect van Gaal to give him at least another season to rediscover his best form.
What do you think - do Manchester United even need Gaitan?
