Manchester United will only pay the €35 million release clause of Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan if they sell Angel di Maria this summer.
This is according to Portuguese newspaper Record - and brought to our attention by Portuguese football reporter Jan Hagen - who understand that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira is not prepared to sell the club’s prized asset for anything less than €35 million.
Manchester United are interested in signing the Argentina international this summer, potentially as a replacement for the unsettled Di Maria, and negotiations are continuing between the two clubs.

The report adds that Manchester United have reached a €60 million agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for the transfer of Di Maria, but that a deal is still not yet finalised even though the player has reportedly agreed personal terms with the French champions.
Manchester United fans were hoping to see the best of Di Maria next season following a troublesome debut campaign with the Red Devils.
Di Maria is a far better player than Gaitan
The former Real Madrid star impressed at the Copa America in Chile this summer - although he was unfortunate to pick up an injury in the final - and appeared to have rediscovered some much-needed confidence following a difficult year at Old Trafford.
While Gaitan has been a brilliant player for Benfica since joining the club from Boca Juniors in 2010, the 27-year-old is not in the same class as Di Maria.
That Gaitan has only won nine caps for Argentina since making his international debut in 2009 - Di Maria, by comparison has won 66 - says much about the gulf in quality between the two players.
