Matteo Darmian tells fans he will work hard at Manchester United

Published 1 Comments

Matteo Darmian has taken to Twitter to tell Manchester United fans he is ready to work hard in order to succeed at Old Trafford.

The Italian full-back, who completed his £14.4 million move from Torino last week, said he is “honoured and excited” after signing for the Red Devils.

Darmian will fly out to the United States with his new teammates on Monday as Manchester United prepare for the start of the 2015-16 campaign with friendlies against Club America, San Jose Earthquakes, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

The 25-year-old will be joined in the US by fellow summer signings Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Confirmation of the respective deals to sign Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin are imminent after the two central midfielders underwent medicals with Manchester United on Sunday evening.

Van Gaal delighted to sign Darmian

The signings of Depay, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin may have generated the most attention from fans and the media alike, but the acquisition of Darmian promises to be a very shrewd move by Louis van Gaal.

Explaining why he signed the Italian, Van Gaal told Manchester United’s official website: "Matteo is a right-sided full back with the versatility of also being able to play on the left. He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in the attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League.

"Matteo will be a great addition to the team. I am delighted to welcome Matteo to the club and look forward to working with him in the coming days."

Darmian's signing could be vital

Darmian will become Manchester United’s first-choice right-back, provided he impresses on the club’s pre-season tour, leapfrogging both Antonio Valencia and Rafael, whose future at Old Trafford is now in severe doubt.

The former AC Milan starlet is two-footed, powerful, quick and has won 13 caps for Italy since making his international debut last year.

Manchester United were linked with other right-backs earlier this summer - including Dani Alves and Nathaniel Clyne - and the Darmian deal came out of the blue.

But the Red Devils have secured the services of a potentially first-class right-back who could make a big difference for the English giants in both the Premier League and the Champions League next season.
