Arsenal remain interested in signing Real Madrid star Karim Benzema, and with make a move for him if Rafael Benitez doesn’t use him as a first-choice striker.
That’s according to the Daily Telegraph, who cite Spanish newspaper El Confidencial in speculating that the France international hasn’t yet been spoken to by Benitez and could well tumble down the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of the ex-Napoli boss’ maiden campaign there.
Wenger to saviour?
In a move that few could argue with it’s said Benitez may instead prefer to play Cristiano Ronaldo in a more advanced no.9 role, leaving Benzema to struggle for game-time and thus, perhaps, unhappy with his role.

Yet, the same report states that if that situation comes to pass then Arsenal could turn into his rescuers, with Wenger still lacking the services of a star centre-forward. The Gunners’ major rivals have been busy strengthening, and though Wenger has signed Petr Cech, his side could do with an out and out goalscorer.
At the moment there’s nobody at the Emirates Stadium that can lay claim to comfortably scoring 20+ league goals a season.

Alexis Sanchez made an incredible impression during his first term in north London but he’s better served acting as support for natural finishers, whilst Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck have also carved niches for themselves as assisters rather than the men who put the ball in the back of the net.
That points to the fact that Arsenal could certainly do with a player of Benzema’s natural prowess in front of goal, though his current valuation of £46million may be a grey area in negotiations. Indeed according to El Confidencial journalist Kike Marin, Wenger has told Benzema he will come to his aid, and it’s logical that he might use Mesut Ozil to help him do as much.
Ozil the mediator?
The Germany international formed a good partnership with Benzema during his time at Real and can vouch for how positive a move to Arsenal would be for his former teammate.
Ultimately it looks likely to be a decision made by Benitez, but if Wenger is serious about taking the striker to the Emirates Stadium it definitely remains a possibility.
