"The time where we had to sell our best players is over for sure,'' Arsene Wenger defiantly told SkySports.

Arsenal fans will be overjoyed to hear this from the Frenchman.

Arsenal - since the Premier League started have been seen as a selling club, unable to hold onto their most important players when the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City come calling but this period is over says the 65-year-old.

Defiant Wenger

Wenger said: "The time where we had to sell our best players is over for sure.

"We had five or six years where we were financially restricted, we had to balance the books and we had to pay the stadium back. This time has gone.

"It was a very sensitive period, and mentally a difficult period, but now we are over that.

Now we are competing with everybody on the financial front and I think we can keep our best players."

Title contenders once more

Since losing Robin van Persie to Manchester United in the summer of 2012, Arsenal have not been forced into selling key players in order to secure the club's long-term future.

Since then, Mesut Ozil, Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez have all arrived at The Emirates without any big name players leaving the club.

Still a long-way off

Arsenal, of course still have nowhere near the financial spending power to compete with the 2 Manchester clubs and Chelsea and the Arsenal boss will still be as prudent as ever when it comes to spending the clubs' money.

The long serving Frenchman has always maintained he will not spend the club's money unless there's is a position to be filled and will never spend money for the sake of it.

Having said that, Arsenal fans can expect no more departures - something that will massively help the club consistently compete for top honours.
