Louis van Gaal has hinted that he will make a ‘surprise’ signing this summer, admitting that he could be short of attacking options at the moment.
Having sold Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce and opted not to sign Radamel Falcao permanently after the Colombian’s failed loan spell, Van Gaal has but three notable options when it comes to regular strikers, and one of those is Javier Hernandez, who of course spent last term on loan away from the club.
With that in mind it’s logical to assume that the Dutchman will be targeting the purchase of another frontman in the coming weeks, and his recent quotes offered to the media have done little to quell the speculation.

“We have Rooney, he can play in strikers’ position, and all media had written he should play there so I listen and now you put this question so don’t know what you want," Van Gaal said yesterday.
“Also Chicharito and maybe James Wilson and maybe there comes a surprise."
Obviously ‘surprise’ doesn’t mean he’s going to go all guns blazing to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester, nor does it even guarantee that he’s set to splurge big money on a European striker.
However it’s hard to believe Van Gaal’s use of the term indicates anything other than the fact he’s in the market for a goalscorer, either one who can serve in a backup capacity or one who can challenge Wayne Rooney.
An alternative is that he could mean he’s going to use another player in the role, perhaps the young Adnan Januzaj or Angel Di Maria. Maybe he knows something fans don’t and he’s set to promote a fresh new talent from the academy.
Those would certainly represent surprises, although we’re still backing the idea he’ll want someone proven as he seeks to lead his team to a major trophy.
United have already spent plenty on the likes of Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian, but there’s money left yet in the coffers with which Van Gaal can fine tune his squad.
