Morgan Schneiderlin was the pick of four debutants for Manchester United on Saturday as the French midfielder, a recent acquisition from Southampton, scored the solitary goal in victory over Club America in Seattle.

Louis van Gaal gave 45 minutes each to all of his summer acquisitions - Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and, of course, Schneiderlin - as the began their US tour with a narrow triumph.

It was Darmian, Depay and Schneiderlin who started from the off for the new club at CenturyLink Field, and it took only five minutes for the latter to net what was to be the only goal of a reasonably turgid encounter.

The £25 million signing looped a well placed header from a Juan Mata cross over Hugo Gonzalez and, following the game, revealed his goal was all part of some specific work that had been done on the training ground.

“We worked a lot yesterday on set-pieces and I was told to get to the far post,” Schneiderlin told MUTV.

“I was happy to get the ball and it was a great cross from Mata.

“I am very happy to score on my first game for United. But the main thing is to get fitness in the first game back in pre-season.”

Manchester United supporters were not afforded the opportunity to see their two new midfield recruits feature in the same side and, no doubt, they will be eagerly waiting to see this Schneiderlin-Schweinsteiger axis in action.

The France international featured alongside the man he is expected to succeed - Michael Carrick - while Schweinsteiger played support to Ander Herrera, whose own place in the Manchester United team is now open to debate.

After seemingly solving his midfield issues - in terms of personnel, not yet formation - attention for Van Gaal will now turn to attacking reinforcements following the departure of Robin van Persie.

Wayne Rooney and James Wilson, the only centre-forwards remaining at Old Trafford, played a half each and much will need to be done to bolster this department before the close of the transfer period.
