For the second successive International Champions Cup (ICC) match, Louis van Gaal deployed his £31 million summer signing Depay behind Wayne Rooney.
One of the key reasons Van Gaal signed the 21-year-old earlier this summer was because of his impressive versatility, although the majority of fans expected Depay was brought to Old Trafford in order to occupy the right-wing position.

Van Gaal experimenting with Depay
That might still prove to be the case, although Depay has shown enough over the previous two matches to suggest he can play as a No. 10.
These opening two pre-season matches, against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes, provided Van Gaal with an opportunity to experiment a little.
Tougher fixtures on the horizon
But up next are European champions Barcelona, on Saturday night, before United’s final ICC fixture against Paris Saint-Germain on July 29.
Van Gaal will be determined to ensure Manchester United continue to build momentum ahead of their Premier League opener against Tottenham on August 8 and will subsequently be desperate to win both showpiece fixtures.
It will be interesting, therefore, to see whether Van Gaal switches Depay to one of the wings. The Netherlands international produced his best performances for PSV Eindhoven from wide areas last season, netting a superb 28 goals in 40 matches in the process.
So far so good for Memphis Depay
It’s been so far so good for the self-confident Depay at Manchester United - and here’s how the fans have reacted to the forward’s first goal for his new club.
Manchester United fans are now excited to see what Depay, who was named as the best young player in the world by France Football magazine last week, strut his stuff on a weekly basis at Old Trafford.
Having already been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, there is a real buzz amongst the Red Devils’ faithful about this particular signing.
