Rio Ferdinand has pleaded with Real Madrid target David de Gea to stay with Manchester United beyond this summer - albeit in a very unique way.

The retired defender, who played alongside De Gea at Old Trafford for three seasons before his departure in 2014, recorded a short Instagram video showing him in his car playing the 1990s one-hit wonder ‘Please Don’t Go’ by Nottingham-based dance act KWS. (Watch the clip by scrolling down this page).

Half an hour earlier, Ferdinand had asked his 6.33 million Twitter followers why De Gea was not involved in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday night.

De Gea was left out of Manchester United’s squad for the second successive International Champions Cup fixture due to a minor injury.

Many fans were unconvinced De Gea was genuinely injured, although the fact he could play against Barcelona on Saturday suggests Louis van Gaal was telling the truth.

De Gea could still sign for Real Madrid

Although De Gea was taken on Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States, there is still a chance he will sign for Real Madrid before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.

Real Madrid are determined to sign the Spain international, despite acquiring the services of Kiko Casilla from Espanyol last week, but United are not prepared to do business unless they receive Sergio Ramos in return.

Los Blancos are reluctant to sell the centre-back, who is poised to replace Iker Casillas as Real Madrid’s next permanent captain, although Manchester United officials believe the ten-time European champions may eventually buckle.

The relationship between Ramos and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, while not as cold as it was last month, remains frosty.

Sergio Romero set to sign for United

Sam Johnstone has impressed in place of De Gea in the wins over Club America and San Jose Earthquakes. The 22-year-old has taken the place of Victor Valdes, who looks certain to leave Old Trafford following a bust-up with Van Gaal.

Manchester United want to offload Valdes as soon as possible and are set to replace the former Barcelona goalkeeper with Argentina international Sergio Romero, who is a free agent after leaving Sampdoria this summer.

Jasper Cillessen could also sign

If De Gea does leave Old Trafford this summer, United are confident they would be able to sign Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen late in the transfer window.

United did something similar with Daley Blind last season after missing out on several transfer targets, signing the Netherlands international on the final day of the transfer window last summer.
