In a bid to strengthen their midfield options, Manchester City have targeted Kevin De Bruyne as a reinforcement.
The Wolfsburg midfielder played a pivotal role in his club’s Champions League-qualifying season last year, notching over twenty assists. That said, it is not hard to see why City are chomping at the bit to sign him.
Unfortunately for Manuel Pellegrini, Wolfsburg are holding firm on their most prized asset. Wolfsburg’s sporting director, Klaus Allofs had plenty to say on the matter, none of it good for suitors.

"We don't have a game plan for what would happen if If someone comes with that much money... it's not happened yet so we don't need to think about it," he said, as per ESPN.
"But Kevin is also categorised as not for sale. I think he played a decisive role for our team last year. When you have the sporting ambition that we have, it should be forbidden to let him go."
There have been numerous occasions of a smaller club losing top players to their larger competitors. You don’t have to think back farther than a few days for the last instance. Liverpool lost youngster Raheem Sterling to City and now the Sky Blues have turned their attention to Wolfsburg.
Can Wolfsburg hold out?
Should the German side hold out against City, they would be sending out a real statement of intent to the rest of the footballing world.
In reality, Wolfsburg would offer just as much as City can. For one, City have found it hard enough to break out of the group stages, let alone the quarter-finals. Moving to the Etihad would not increase De Bruyne’s chance of progressing further in Europe.
Pellegrini’s side might have a better chance of winning the Premier League. However, with Manchester United and Chelsea strengthening, a title charge is far from guaranteed. A fight for the Champions League places seems far more likely.
Do City need him?
There is also the fact that City do not really need De Bruyne. Signing a top class defensive-midfielder would better serve the club. Yaya Toure is ageing and every other defensive-midfield option lacks depth.
Nonetheless, De Bruyne would still improve City’s squad. The rich clubs often get what they want and City will continue in their pursuit until the end of the window. Expect a barrage of expensive bids to be lodged making it more and more difficult for Wolfsburg’s adamant sporting director to resist.
City fans, is there any chance you'll land De Bruyne this summer? Let us know in the comments box below.
