Arsene Wenger granted permission to break Arsenal transfer record

Published 22 Comments

Arsene Wenger has been granted permission to break Arsenal’s transfer record this summer by club director Lord Harris.

Harris has told the Daily Mail that Arsenal have over £200 million in the club’s accounts and that Wenger would be allowed to spend big this summer if he found another superstar in the transfer market.

The Gunners’ director went as far as to say that, with the exception of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Wenger could bring the player of his dreams to the Emirates Stadium.

The report claims Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema is currently top of Wenger’s summer transfer wish-list - although Los Blancos currently have no plans to offload the France international.

However, Harris’ latest comments suggest that if Wenger can convince Benzema to leave the Bernabeu for the Emirates, Arsenal’s chiefs would be more than happy to do the deal.

“Money was tight when we moved to the Emirates but it's a lot freer now,” said the 72-year-old. “We could go into the market and probably buy any player in the world, apart from half a dozen who are un-buyable.

“In the accounts, there's over £200million in the bank. You could say to Arsene we've got no money and he wouldn't worry, or you could give him £100m and he might not spend it.

“At the moment there are no plans to sign anyone, unless he finds a real superstar like Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez. He's looking for one of those but there aren't many available. We would back him to break the club's transfer record. If he wanted the man, he could have him.

“Apart from Messi and Ronaldo, he could have any player. We will probably have to break the club record to get the man he wants.”

Benzema would cost more than Ozil

Arsenal have been linked with Benzema in recent weeks - it’s understood Wenger wants the 27-year-old as an upgrade on Olivier Giroud - but Rafael Benitez wants to keep the popular French striker.

The highest fee Arsenal have ever paid for a player was £42.4 million, for Benzema’s former Madrid teammate Mesut Ozil in 2013, but the Gunners would need to pay an even higher fee to land the Florentino Perez favourite this summer.
