With the £32.5 million signing of Christian Benteke from Aston Villa now wrapped up, Brendan Rodgers must feel that the void left by Luis Suarez has now been filled and make them serious title contenders again for the upcoming season.

Would Liverpool have finished sixth had Luis Suarez remained at the club last season and Daniel Sturridge stayed fit?

Liverpool’s attacking philosophy relies heavily on strikers. In the 13/14 season, both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were top scorers in the league with 31 goals and 21 goals respectively. Any attacking team missing that kind of threat upfront would have suffered.
Although Benteke is a different style of player to Suarez, what he does bring is goals, while he adds an extra dimension to Liverpool's game, something which Brendan Rodgers failed to get from last season's signings - Balotelli and Lambert. Averaging nearly a goal every other game in a team that has battled relegation for the past three seasons, Benteke’s scoring ratio can only increase at a team like Liverpool.

And with Rodgers’ other signings now captured, as well as last season’s signings now settled in, there is an air of positivity buzzing around Anfield again.
Philippe Coutinho has been joined by fellow Brazilian Roberto Firmino who will add to the supply line. Divock Origi, the young Belgian who has been touted with a bright future, joins the team after spending last season on loan. And Emre Can, who played excellently last season out of position, will be given the chance to run the midfield in his preferred position with new signing James Milner.
If Rodgers can get the team scoring freely again, with the same ruthlessness as they did in the 13/14 season, then Liverpool have a realistic chance to challenge for the title again.
