The general secretary of the German Football Association insists FIFA have given him assurances Bundesliga clubs will not have to release players for the Olympics.

Wolfgang Niersbach has spoken with officials from football´s world governing body and claims German clubs are not obliged to allow their players to travel to Beijing. Werder Bremen and Schalke are in dispute with Diego and Rafinha respectively over the players´ desire to travel with the Brazil Under-23 squad to the Games.

"There is no obligation to release players, whether they are under or over the age of 23," Wolfgang Niersbach told Sport Bild magazine after a telephone call with FIFA officials.
