Manchester United will not bid for Nicolas Otamendi this summer

Manchester United will not make another move to sign Nicolas Otamendi this summer, despite the fact he’s been hotly linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Louis van Gaal has thrown out the idea of convincing Valencia to sell the Argentina international, as he believes the Red Devils are simply being used to drive up the interest in order to create a bidding war.

No bid for Otamendi

Throughout the early stages of the transfer window United were frequently mentioned as admiring suitors with regards to Otamendi, but Valencia refused to entertain proposals that didn’t match his release clause of £35million.

That appears to be too much for Van Gaal, who is in the market for an experienced centre-back, and as a result MEN say the Dutchman has pulled the plug on any potential deal.

What it means for the player is that he will now likely remain at the Mestalla, despite a supposed longing to find a bigger club, but it could have greater repercussions for United, as they’ll have to now find another viable option in the market.

Alternatives in the market

The obvious candidates are the likes of Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, although neither of those men look like feasible purchases in the slightest.

Ramos is still believed to be miffed at Los Blancos for the way he’s been treated, but many in Spain feel this is simply another ploy to earn a new contract, and reports as recently as yesterday implied that a lucrative deal was close to being signed by the Santiago Bernabeu veteran.

Meanwhile Hummels has pledged his future to the Signal Iduna Park in the wake of Jurgen Klopp’s exit. Even a lack of Champions League football wasn’t enough to force him into taking his leave, and that means Van Gaal’s options are now running thin.

Argentine dismay

All told the 63-year-old isn’t having too much luck for Argentines of late. On top of the disaster that has become the Otamendi saga, Angel Di Maria has reportedly gone AWOL as he seeks to push through a move to Paris Saint-Germain, whilst Marcos Rojo is awaiting a two week fine for missing his flight to United’s pre-season training camp with passport issues.
