Aston Villa are close to agreeing a deal worth €10 million [£7.1 million] for Nantes midfielder Jordan Veretout, according to French newspaper Ouest France.

After the signing of Jordan Ayew on Monday, and the earlier capture of both Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Amavi, Veretout would take Tim Sherwood's summer signing tally to four - all arriving from Ligue 1 clubs.

Veretout played 36 matches for Nantes last season, scoring a respectable seven goals from central midfield. The 22-year-old box-to-box midfielder was said to be a target for Tottenham and Liverpool, yet despite this Villa look very likely to push through a deal for the former France U21 international.

Nantes President Waldemar Kita said: “We are basically agreed on everything. I am obliged to give in, he is 22, he has a big future and he will play for a great English club.”

Flutters of reports linking Charles N'Zogbia with a move to Nantes as part of the Veretout deal are yet to be verified, although the winger's wages would surely be an unnecessary stumbling block if that were the case.

Sherwood's team drew 2-2 against Wolves last night in their penultimate warm-up fixture before the start of the new season.
