Manchester United remain confident that they will be able to replace David de Gea with a new goalkeeper should the Spaniard depart for Real Madrid. De Gea is expected to be at Old Trafford when the season starts next week, but losing him will not leave the Red Devils without a recognised No1.
The Manchester Evening News says Sergio Romero, who agreed a three-year deal with the Red Devils earlier this week, has already been earmarked as a replacement for Victor Valdes. The former Barcelona star has been told he can leave after failing to adapt to Louis van Gaal's philosophy or so the Dutchman claims.
Romero, a free transfer from Sampdoria, is not expected to be to the first choice goalkeeper at Manchester United whether De Gea leaves or not. Instead, there is a plan in place to sign another shot stopper that is worthy of the No1 jersey.

De Gea was widely expected to leave for the Bernabeu at the very start of the transfer window after refusing to extend his contract with the Red Devils beyond 2016. Manchester United had offered to make him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world, but were left disappointed when the 24-year-old set his heart on a return to his hometown.
However, Ed Woodward and Co have dug their heels in over the £35million asking price and have so far refused to do business with Real Madrid unless the fee is met. United's continued interest in Sergio Ramos has only served to complicate matters further.

De Gea set to stay?
The Spain international has now been told to prepare for Manchester United's opening Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. The Red Devils have few qualms with forcing him to stay at the club for the remaining 12 months of his contract, even if it means losing him for nothing next summer.
But while it is looking more and more likely that De Gea will be at Manchester United when the transfer window slams shut on September 1, Van Gaal is equally confident of replacing him should Real Madrid finally meet their asking price.
The current top choice to replace De Gea is Ajax star Jasper Cillessen but there is also a mention for Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris. However, not only would the Premier League club be unwilling to sell to a direct rival, but news that the France international has broken his wrist has essentially ruled him out of the running.
