The three stooges
United fans are likely waiting with baited breathe to see just who will make Van Gaal’s squad for the club’s opening Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, and the Dutchman has offered a morsel sure to whet the appetite even more.
Van Gaal confirmed that Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw were all set to start the first league game on August 8, offering a huge hint to how his defence could line up.
“I think I shall play [Luke] Shaw with [Matteo] Darmian, and with Daley Blind," Van Gaal said.
"The right central position I have to consider. I am very pleased with the performance of Matteo Darmian, and you can see he can play on the right and left."
Shaw’s obviously a left-back but struggled at times last season, so if he slots straight in some fans might be surprised. Meanwhile Darmian is in line to start ahead of Antonio Valencia and Rafael da Silva at right-back, and Blind looks increasingly like featuring as a centre-back.
The latter choice is one that certain sections of the support have yet to properly get behind. Blind hasn’t got much experience as a central defender, so is he good enough to act as a substitute to the likes of Sergio Ramos, Mats Hummels and Nicolas Otamendi? We shall see.
In other news United are set to tie Ashley Young to a new deal, because Van Gaal believes he is a key component. According to reports the England international is set to pen an extension, despite the fact he’s also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.
Naturally the 30-year-old wants to continue his stay at Old Trafford and so United don’t have any convincing to do. Does this mean Angel Di Maria is definitely leaving?
Last but certainly not least Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed his next move will be a ‘surprise’. That mysterious old dog.
The enigmatic Swede told how he was currently very happy with Paris Saint-Germain, and refused to offer any clue as to where his career might take him next.
