Euro failure caused Hickersberger exit

Josef Hickersberger has admitted failure to qualify for the knock-out stages of Euro 2008 persuaded him to step down as Austria coach.

The 60-year-old announced his decision to quit the national team on Monday following the co-hosts´ elimination in the group stages.

He told a press conference on Tuesday: "We had very good and in part sensational phases, but we did not make it into the quarter-finals, did not achieve our united goal, our dream of the ´Wonder of Vienna´. For that I am very sorry and I accept the consequences."
