Chelsea have agreed a fee for Augsburg left-back Abdul Baba Rahman, who is poised to become the Blues’ third major summer signing.

This is according to German publication Sportbild, who understand that Chelsea have agreed to pay the Bundesliga club a hefty €25 million transfer fee.

Baba Rahman will fill the void in Chelsea’s first-team squad left by Filipe Luis, who sealed a move back to Atletico Madrid this week, and will provide competition for the Blues’ current first-choice left-back Cesar Azpilicueta.

The Ghana international, 21, was one of the best-performing full-backs in Germany last season and caught the eye of several top European clubs in the process.

Chelsea, though, appear to have successfully fended off competition from the likes of Juventus, Manchester City and AS Roma.

Augsburg wanted over €20m

Just last week, Augsburg chairman Jonas Hoffman told reporters he was not interested in selling his prized asset to the Premier League champions.

"We do not need the Baba millions," he told Bild, according to Goal. "We have a good, solid team here.

"I am very optimistic that Baba will continue his great performances with us. He's made a very good impression at our recent training camp.

"Why keep Baba? I am an Augsburg fan. To me, it's more important that I spend the evening watching Augsburg win with a beer in my hand than when we have more money in the bank account.

"There's no need to even talk about an offer under €20m, as I've previously stated."

But it seems Chelsea’s decision to pay in excess of €20 million has swayed Hoffman, who will make a tidy profit on the African defender. Augsburg signed him for just €2.5 million from Greuther Fürth last August.

Video: Baba Rahman in action

Baba Rahman appears to possess all of the key required qualities to become a successful full-back in the Premier League - most notably pace, strength and decision-making - and Chelsea fans can watch their new signing in action by clicking play on the video below.

Chelsea building an impressive young defence

Jose Mourinho is looking to bring the average age of his squad down and is in the process of assembling a solid defence for the next five to 10 years.

Kurt Zouma could be joined in central defence, if Chelsea get their way, by Everton’s John Stones. Baba Rahman could occupy the left full-back position, with Azpilicueta switching to right-back once the ageing Branislav Ivanovic begins to slow down.

But Baba Rahman may need to be patient for his chance. Mourinho has made no secret of his admiration for Azpilicueta over the past couple of years and will stick with the Spain international for the club’s most important matches.

Baba Rahman - who follows Radamel Falcao and Asmir Begovic through the gates of Stamford Bridge this summer - will get his chance to impress when Azpilicueta is injured, suspending or in need of a rest.
