Memphis Depay should be handed the No.7 Manchester United shirt

With Angel di Maria's short stint in Manchester coming to an abrupt end, attentions will quickly turn to which star will become the club's next No.7.

The Manchester United No.7 shirt is one of the most iconic in world football. From Eric Cantona to Cristiano Ronaldo, the Red Devils have had some quite wonderful player star in the famous shirt, but who will be next?

Ultimately, it's all been a bit of a nightmare for Angel di Maria, who really should have enjoyed a successful, lengthy career on English soil. Seemingly, ahead of his move to Manchester last summer, Di Maria had all the traits to become a superstar at Old Trafford: classy, with extraordinary pace and moments of genius, it would have been foolish to suggest that the Argentine's move to Old Trafford would have ended in failure.

However, after an attempted robbery at his home, struggles to find form and fitness, and a lack of drive to really make a success of his United career, failure is exactly how you will define his nightmare season in England's elite division.

But he and the club will move on sooner rather than later. United fans will quickly forget the man that should have made history at their club. And, while many will now start to look at possible Di Maria replacements, United may already have replaced him.

Next No.7

In Memphis Depay, Manchester United have a future world-beater on their hands. They also have their next No.7 - and here's why:

The Dutchman, at just 21-years-old, oozes confidence and has a certain aura about him. Not since signing Cristiano Ronaldo have Manchester United signed such an exciting youngster.

Of course, critics will quickly point to the fact that he's yet to kick a ball in the Premier League. That, of course, will change on August 8 when he lines up behind Wayne Rooney in attack. And that says it all.

It's taken Van Gaal a matter of weeks to realise that he wants his special talent at the forefront of his attack. In truth, many had expected the United boss to utilise the former PSV man out on the wing, but that's now seemingly unlikely to be the case.

Some players, no matter their age, are just meant for bigger and better things. There's no point holding Depay back, and at Manchester United that would be impossible anyway.

The United hierarchy must place their confidence in the young talent right from the offset. He has everything to become the next iconic No.7 at the Theatre of Dreams.

Special talent

Depay is special. He really is. You only have to look at him to see that he's got something about him. His build is rather extraordinary - he's arguably in better shape than what Ronaldo was in when he was of the same age.

With a great deal of creativity, pace, strength and an eye for goal, but most importantly a willingness to improve and become a top, top player, the Dutchman can enjoy a special love affair with Manchester United.
