It was reported on Wednesday, by Spanish newspaper Marca, that Ramos has agreed a new five-year contract with his current employers and an announcement will be made before the new La Liga season gets underway on August 23.

Ramos reportedly secured the pay rise he desired, while his relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is healthy again following a turbulent few weeks.

Real Madrid desperate to keep Ramos

Manchester United, a club spokesman told the Daily Star this week, feel “betrayed” by Ramos. The believed they stood a genuine chance of signing the 29-year-old this summer and were shocked by the World Cup winner’s sudden U-turn.

United made it clear to Real Madrid that they would only sell their wantaway goalkeeper David de Gea if Ramos was offered as part of the deal.

But Real Madrid were not prepared to offload their influential long-serving centre-back, despite his unhappiness at the Bernabeu, after selling Iker Casillas to FC Porto.

In another last-ditch attempt to convince Ramos to sign a new contract, Real Madrid offered him the captain’s armband, vacated by the aforementioned Casillas.

Hope for Man United?

It appeared that Ramos had made up his mind to commit his future to Real Madrid - but this latest report raises doubts once again.

However, Cadena SER understand it’s still more likely that Ramos will sign a new deal with Real Madrid, rather than leave the club for Manchester United.

Fans react on Twitter

While most United fans have given up on the idea of Ramos joining the Red Devils this summer, others have reacted with a renewed sense of optimism on Twitter.

United's defence is a big concern

United boss Louis van Gaal told reporters this week that he will not target a new centre-back if the clubs fails to land Ramos.

But the fact Van Gaal has failed to secured the services of a new top-level central defender is a concern for Manchester United fans, who watched their side slump to a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in mid-week.

Phil Jones was particularly poor, while Scottish football pundit Craig Burley has warned Van Gaal that he’ll be committing ‘football suicide’ if he plays Daley Blind in central defence this season.

But that’s precisely what Van Gaal intends to do - at the start of the 2015-16 campaign, at least.

Blind will line-up alongside either Jones or Chris Smalling against Tottenham on August 8.
