David de Gea’s long-awaited transfer to Real Madrid appears to finally be on, as Louis van Gaal has decided he is going to sell the Spaniard, according to reports.
Spanish newspaper AS today claims that Van Gaal has grown tired of playing hardball with Real over De Gea’s future, and will look to recoup maximum compensation this summer rather than risk losing him on a free next year.
De Gea to leave
The constant back and forth between the two clubs certainly seems to have taken its toll on De Gea, who has looked uncharacteristically shaky in United’s pre-season games.

Indeed AS state that Van Gaal now believes the best thing for all parties is for an agreement to be reached, and that he has asked his club to close a deal that would see De Gea make a move back to the Spanish capital.
Will Real do a deal?
That said it isn’t confirmed whether or not Real, and new boss Rafael Benitez, are desperate to take him this summer.
Los Blancos have already signed Kiko Casilla and have Keylor Navas waiting in the wings to become the established number one, and it might be that they risk waiting to get De Gea on a free when his contract runs out.
That appears to be a scenario United are reluctant to see play out. They’ve signed Sergio Romero on a free transfer and are also said to be interested in Ajax star Jasper Cillessen, implying that they can perhaps afford to let De Gea leave now, whereas before they were unable to without being caught short.
