Many eyebrows were raised when Liverpool agreed to pay a sizeable £32.5 million to acquire Christian Benteke from Aston Villa - a figure that perhaps highlighted their desperation for a proven Premier League striker.
Liverpool have made a habit of making expensive signings during the Brendan Rodgers era and, so far, most of them have failed to establish themselves at Anfield. There was, then, plenty of trepidation among supporters when the Benteke deal was announced.
Only a year ago had they seen Mario Balotelli arrive at Liverpool following the departure of Luis Suarez, yet that deal has to go down as one of the most ill advised the club has ever conducted.

It won’t take a great deal from Benteke for him to prove a better signing than Balotelli, and he may already have done just that following a fabulous strike on his debut for the club on Sunday.
Afforded his first start in Liverpool colours a week before the Premier League campaign begins, the 24-year-old Belgium international responded in quite breathtaking fashion with a thunderous volley against Swindon.
Philippe Coutinho played a lofted pass to Benteke who, on the edge of the opposition area, took the ball onto his chest then swivelled to crack the ball right footed and whizzing into the Swindon net.
What a sensational goal it was. Liverpool fans, and no doubt Benteke himself, will take the goals whichever way they come over the next few months, but what a way to announce yourself at a new club.
