Memphis Depay handed number 7 shirt by Manchester United

Published 3 Comments

Manchester United have announced their squad numbers for the forthcoming season, with Memphis Depay being handed the hallowed number seven shirt.

The Red Devils confirmed the numbers via their official Twitter account ahead of the Premier League’s opening weekend, which starts tomorrow, with United fans sure to be happy to see an end to the speculation over who would claim the number Angel Di Maria has just vacated.

#7 decided

Of all the numbers expected to be up for grabs it was the #7 that was the most hotly speculated about, with Di Maria’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain freeing up the number that the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Eric Cantona have worn previously.

It’s now Dutch new boy Depay who will be charged with taking the legacy forward, with Louis van Gaal making a big statement by offering the shirt to the former PSV youngster.

NO major surprises

Meanwhile there’s no squad numbers for either Victor Valdes or the burgeoning Nick Powell, perhaps offering an indication as to where Van Gaal sees them fitting into his squad, which is to say not at all.

Aside from that there are few surprises to be found, with Bastian Schweinsteiger occupying his favoured number 31 and David de Gea retaining the number one jersey despite the fact that rumours persist in claiming he’s to move to Real Madrid.

United kick off their new season with a home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow. The Lilywhites will present Van Gaal’s new-look Red Devils with a stern test, and fans will be praying United can get off to a positive start.
