Writing in his Daily Mail column, former-Liverpool star Carragher says that he held a meeting with Oxlade-Chamberlain's dad, former-England international Mark, with Gerrard while The Ox was at Southampton and considering a move to Liverpool and Arsenal among others.
At that time Saints were in League One and a teenage Chamberlain was tearing up England's third tier. He eventually moved to Arsenal for a fee that could rise to £15m and Carragher admits 'Liverpool's loss has been Arsenal's gain.'

"There has always been a buzz around Oxlade-Chamberlain and when he was leaving Southampton, Liverpool were one of the clubs in the bidding," Carragher writes.
"His dad, Mark, visited Melwood [Liverpool's training ground] and Steven Gerrard and I both spoke with him in the hope he would make a big move north.
"Liverpool's loss was Arsenal's gain. He has done reasonably well at the Emirates but this is a big year for Oxlade-Chamberlain.
"He's a player with plenty of attributes - he's quick, strong and has an eye for goal - but what would you say his best position is?"
Carragher was discussing Chamberlain following his match-winning goal for the Gunners against Chelsea in the Community Shield.
The Arsenal man has looked excellent in preseason for Arsene Wenger's side, starring in the Emirates Cup before last weekend's Wembley showpiece.
As for Liverpool, they are still hoping to bring in one or two players before the close of the transfer window. The Anfield side open their Premier League campaign with a trip to Stoke, the site of their 6-1 humiliation on the final day of last season.
What do you think Liverpool fans - would The Ox have been a good signing for the Reds?
