Three potential Angel di Maria replacements for Manchester United

Published 9 Comments

When Angel di Maria signed for Manchester United a year ago, many great things were expected from him.

Initially he provided us with glimpses of magic but as the season progressed, the slope of his form went downhill. Towards the end of the season the Argentine was found warming the bench.

Finally, after a lacklustre and disappointing debut season, Di Maria completed his move to Paris Saint-Germain for around £44 million.

Manchester United suffered a loss commercially and now faces the task of replacing him with another world-class star as the club prepares itself for a return to European football.

The following three players can fill the void left by the departure of Di Maria.

1. Pedro

The Spaniard is no longer a starter for Barcelona as the trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar is expected to begin where they left the previous season.

Frustrated by the lack of opportunities, he is heavily linked with Manchester United who are in search of a replacement for Di Maria.

As such, Manchester United must take advantage of his present situation and try to lure the forward. He is a quality winger adept at playing on either side of the pitch and has excellent technique.

Already the media is suggesting that such a move is imminent and it remains only a matter of time before the deal is finalised. His addition will surely bolster Van Gaal's squad.

Pedro is a highly experienced player at the top level who has won every club competition with the Catalan giants and won the FIFA World Cup and the Euro Cup with Spain.

2. Marco Reus

The Borussia Dortmund hitman is an asset to any team. The 2014-15 season was a season to forget for Reus as both the player and his club were unable to deliver. Dortmund finished seventh in the Bundesliga while Reus was often sidelined by injuries which hampered his progress.

The former Bundesliga Player of the Year is a highly creative player who can play as an attacking midfielder, winger or striker.

Presently, United have only two recognised strikers in Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez. In case of an injury to the strikers, he can provide necessary cover for them.

European powerhouses like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich have been touted as possible destinations for the Dortmund number 11.

But with a contract running till 2019, Manchester United must fight these clubs to get hold of Reus.

3. Antoine Griezmann

The Frenchman enjoyed a fine debut campaign under Diego Simeone where he scored 22 league goals. He overshadowed the prolific Mario Mandzukic during the entire season which is an astonishing feat.

His situation is closely monitored by both Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Van Gaal must at least attempt to sign him as he is a player who often finds the back of the net.

Griezmann is a winger but can also play as striker when need arises. His deceptive pace and sublime skills on the ball will provide United with the cutting edge in their attacking unit.

However, his £43 million buyout clause remains a hurdle. But with Manchester United flooded with cash after the sale of Di Maria, it is a gamble that the club management can successfully take.
