Manchester United are desperate to get a deal done for Valencia star Nicolas Otamendi, with Phil Jones’ recent injury woes leaving them ready to hit the panic button.

According to Spanish newspaper Super Deporte, who have frequently broadcasted updates on Otamendi’s situation, United are ready to return with a bid for the centre-back despite the fact Valencia aren’t willing to sell unless his €50million release clause is met.

Uncerainty rife

The ongoing uncertainty around the player’s future, plus the fact that he’s supposedly made it clear he wants to leave the Mestalla, led to Valencia fans booing the 27-year-old when he turned out for the club during a pre season friendly against AS Roma, implying that there are very few people happy with the current situation.

As a result United may yet move in to remedy the fact that Louis van Gaal hasn’t been able to sign a new centre-back so far, a point made all the more pertinent by the fact that Phil Jones is suffering from thrombosis.

Jones issue

The affliction, though not considered particularly serious, could rule him out for up to a month, leaving United vulnerable at the back.

On top of that Van Gaal was keen on capturing a new defender anyway, with a lack of leadership and experience in the Old Trafford back-line prompting fears that they won’t be able to launch a sustained assault on the Premier League title.

Potential option

Whilst a deal for Sergio Ramos has now been forgotten about, and a move for Mats Hummels ruled out by his decision to stay with Borussia Dortmund, Otamendi is the logical option moving forward.

The obvious hurdle to overcome is Valencia’s insistence on only selling him for €50m, though perhaps United could lower said sum if they offer Victor Valdes as a deal sweetener.

United fans, do you think Super Deporte are right? Is Van Gaal now desperate to land Otamendi? Is your defence strong enough without him? Let us know in the comments box below.
