Chelsea are very close to making their first blockbuster signing of the 2015 summer window, according to German newspaper Bild.
Baba Rahman’s agent has stated his client has agreed personal terms with the Blues, but a transfer fee between Chelsea representatives and Augsburg has yet to be agreed.
Following the departure of Filipe Luis – who returned to his former club, Atletico Madrid – Baba Rahman has become a main transfer target for Chelsea along with Everton center-back John Stones. Both clubs that Chelsea are negotiating with value their respective defenders very highly, and thus Chelsea will have to fork out the cash in order to get their targets.

Baba Rahman and Augsburg enjoyed a brilliant season in the Bundesliga, progressing yet again in their league position and qualifying for the Europa League.
The 2014-15 season was a strange one for the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund fell six places from their finish the season before, headlining a number of clubs who failed to live up to past seasons’ expectations. In all of the turmoil, Augsburg managed to win as many games as they lost (15), finish with a goal difference of zero, and still finish fifth in the league.
There were multiple bright spots in their side – one of which is Baba Rahman. On the offensive end, Baba Rahman is less of a presence; however, Augsburg frequently played with wingers and thus it’s understandable that his attacking contribution is not huge.
Where his game really flourishes is on the defensive end. Baba Rahman was an absolute handful for opposition wingers– he made the most tackles of anyone in the Bundesliga at 109 in 29 starts, while also registering 83 interceptions and 88 clearances.
A defensive full-back with both pace and strength is a coveted jewel in European football at the moment – lots of full-backs are gifted physically, however many of them are caught out of position up the pitch.
As Chelsea play with three in midfield and two wide players, Baba Rahman seems like a perfect replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta when Azpilicueta switches to the right side one Branislav Ivanovic’s legs are gone.
Is he worth the money?
My big question is: Baba Rahman is worth €25 million now?
There are no two ways about it – Baba Rahman is arguably one of the top three left-backs in the Bundesliga along with Juan Bernat and Ricardo Rodriguez.
He is very physically strong, along with solid defensive contribution. He is also very young, which means he has room to improve, especially under a great manager like Jose Mourinho.
However, having said all of that, there is no way he is worth €25 million, regardless of the potential Chelsea might be buying.
In my opinion, they should look elsewhere – Ricardo Rodriguez would come at the same price, and he is a world-class left back. There are more than a handful of left-sided defenders who are valued at that same price at the moment and are better all-round players than Baba Rahman.
