Arsene Wenger is interested in signing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema but has already refused to meet the Spanish club's asking price, according to The Mirror.
Calls for the Arsenal manager to splash the cash on a world-class hitman reached new heights on Sunday afternoon after the Gunners failed to score in a 2-0 defeat to West Ham at Emirates Stadium.
Not only fans, but respected pundits, believe Wenger will fail to bring the Premier League title back to north London unless he signs someone like Benzema before the transfer window closes.

Their reaction does not come without substance, however, as it has been widely claimed by a number of sources that Arsenal are indeed working on a deal for the France international.
However, most of those claims have come from social media, rather than respected journalists like John Cross, who claims that Arsenal retain an interest in signing Benzema, but are not currently working on a transfer.
That is because Wenger has already told Real Madrid that he will not be meeting their asking price. The reports by Cross does not state a price, but other sources have claimed Florentino Perez wants £45million.
With Benzema turning 28 in December, Wenger believes that is too heavy a price to pay, but he is keeping a close eye on the situation as he will make a move if Real Madrid decide to lower their demands.
Wenger saw his current strikers fail to score against the Hammers on Sunday with Olivier Giroud having a particularly poor day up front. However, it was mistakes in defence that eventually led to the catastrophic defeat.
The Arsenal manager will use this week to dissect exactly what went wrong against Slaven Bilic's men and will again try to figure out his best team ahead of the game against Crystal Palace.
