The WWE has a backup plan in case John Cena isn’t fit enough to compete at SummerSlam against Seth Rollins which involves Randy Orton and Sheamus.
The current United States Champion hasn’t stepped foot in a ring since Rollins broke his nose with his knee two weeks ago on Monday Night Raw.
Last week, The Future of WWE issued a title vs title challenge to Cena at SummerSlam, but he is yet to accept as he hasn’t appeared on WWE programming as he is still recovering from his injury.

Right now, Cena is fifty-fifty to return in time for the second biggest pay-per-view of the year. However, he has posted pictures of himself working out, meaning this could all be speculation and he will be on the show for sure.
In case he isn’t able to recover in time for SummerSlam on August 23, the WWE has a backup plan involving Sheamus and Randy Orton.
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, the WWE plans to book Rollins in a singles match against either The Viper or The Celtic Warrior, or they will be booked in a triple threat match.
Whether it is for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship or not wasn’t stated but the likelihood is that it will be.
If Cena can perform, the WWE will resort back to it’s original plans of Cena vs Rollins, and Sheamus vs Orton. It is likely that the WWE will make this final decision on the go-home show of Raw before SummerSlam on August 17.
