Chelsea have been unsuccessful in their attempts to strike a surprise deal for Paris Saint-Germain star Gregory van der Wiel, according to reports in France’s Le Parisien.
The French daily runs this morning with a story that suggests both Manchester United and their Stamford Bridge rivals have been interested in doing business for the Dutch international, but that his current club have no intention of relinquishing his services.
Van der Wiel interest
What’s more, it’s said that Chelsea actually made an approach for a player as they look to find competition - and eventually perhaps a long-term replacement - for Branislav Ivanovic.

Naturally since there’s been virtually no rumours surrounding Van der Wiel’s future, especially none linking him to the Premier League champions, the reports now surfacing will surprise all Blues fans, though Jose Mourinho’s alleged interest shouldn’t altogether be thrown out.
After all, the 27-year-old is a regular fixture in Laurent Blanc’s PSG side, and has featured 41 times for the Dutch national team.

With Ivanovic to be 32 next February it is high time Mourinho starting planning for life without the dominant Serbian on his right flank, and Van der Wiel could be an astute option.
That said Le Parisien aren't speculative in the slightest when it comes to the possibility of the player actually switching clubs.
They say that PSG have immediately rebuffed any approach for the right-back, and that instead he is close to penning a two-year contract extension at the Parc des Princes.
With Ivanovic one of Chelsea’s best players last term, and likely more than capable of improving on his poor start to this season in the Community Shield and the opening Premier League fixture, it’s far from time to hit the panic buttons.
That said, if Mourinho is busy looking for other options it remains to be seen how long the 31-year-old has left as a first-team starter at the Bridge.
Chelsea fans, how long do you think it will be before Ivanovic needs replacing? Would Van der Wiel ever be good enough for you? Let us know in the comments box below.
