Manchester United have named Real Madrid target David de Gea in their Champions League squad for the 2015-16 campaign, ahead of next week’s play-off first leg against Club Brugge.

The Spanish goalkeeper, who wasn’t even named amongst the substitutes for last weekend’s 1-0 win over Tottenham, is one of four goalkeepers selected for the squad - although his compatriot Victor Valdes has been omitted following his high-profile bust-up with Louis van Gaal.

This latest news, brought to our attention by the Mirror, will come as a blow to Real Madrid who still want to sign the 24-year-old before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Manchester United want €40 million for De Gea, who is keen to join the Spanish giants, but Real Madrid feel that’s too much money for a goalkeeper with less than one year remaining on his current contract.

De Gea has no desire to sign a contract extension with the Red Devils and will leave Manchester United for Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer if the two clubs are unable to reach an agreement this month.

David de Gea v Sergio Romero

Van Gaal dropped De Gea for the Premier League opener against Spurs after claiming the keeper was not in the right frame of mind to play.

This was at odds with later reports, which claimed De Gea had made himself available for selection but was snubbed by the veteran Dutch coach.

Sergio Romero came in for De Gea and kept a clean sheet, but the Argentina international could be dropped in favour of De Gea for Friday night’s trip to Aston Villa and next week’s crucial match against Club Brugge if Van Gaal believes it’s in Manchester United’s best interests.
