Rutten will remain at Eredivisie side FC Twente for the duration of the Champions League play-offs before linking up with the Gelsenkirchen club for the start of the 2008/09 campaign.
The 45-year-old has signed a two-year deal at the Veltins Arena and will succeed Mirko Slomka, who was sacked following the 5-1 thrashing at Werder Bremen on April 12.
