Dimitri Payet was signed by West Ham United over the summer from Marseille for £10.7 million. This 28- year-old has secured a long-term five year deal with West Ham but comes with baggage.
His previous record with other French clubs such as Le Havre, AS Excelsior, St Etienne, Lille and Nantes was not good. Question marks arose over his application, consistency, discipline and his tendency to request a transfer when things were not going his own way.
In short he was recognised as having skills but he was also a "hothead" who could prove a liability to any club. But matters changed for Payet at Marseille with Marcello Bielsa as manager.

He was firm but strong and allowed him scope to demonstrate his strengths. Payet responded to this trust and scored seven goals and provided 17 assists, the most in Ligue 1 last season.
This is why his new manager, Slaven Bilic, prior to signing him, described him as his" number one target" as "he's got everything." So what does Payet offer?

He poses problems for the opposition with mazy dribbles, feints, close control and pin-point crosses. He is also good on either foot and is hard to dispossess.
Of the seven goals he scored last season all were from inside the box with two from his left foot, four from his right and one header. Last year he created 135 scoring chances, the most in Europe.
His 17 assists were the fourth best in any major European League in 2014/15 keeping company with De Bruyne for Wolfsburg with 21, Fabregas for Chelsea with 18, Messi with 18 for Barcelona and above Ronaldo for Real Madrid with 16. He also had a passing accuracy of 79.3%.
At present Payet has 15 caps for France as an attacking midfielder/winger. Manager Didier Deschamps, described him as being "very efficient and effective in terms of goals and assists with Marseille."
Bilic is clear that he expects the same consistency and quality at West Ham. He is seen as being fast, having vision and tight control with a good end product. Payet has wanted to play in the Premier League to show off his skills but also in order to improve his technique. He knows why West Ham wanted him and why Bilic convinced him to join: "I'm an attacking footballer and they're counting on me."
