Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has insisted that he never thought about leaving the club over the course of the summer.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the England international, who started in the Red Devils' 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham this past weekend, claims that there hasn't been an issue with his situation at the club.

United, of course, have improved their options in the middle of the park, with the duo of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin having been recruited, however Carrick has welcomed the competition.

When asked about the interest in him over the course of the summer, Carrick stated: "It is not something I thought about at all. It has never been an issue.

"At this stage, you just have to judge it year by year.

Feeling good

"Looking at the players who have been here in the past that is what they have done when they reached this age. They have gone year-on-year and played for a long time. At the moment I feel fine and great, it just depends how it goes.

"We have brought in some really good players this summer. There has always been that competition in the squad.

"There always has been even though people have been talking about buying a midfielder for many a year. There is always competition. That is what brings out the best in players. It has done over the years and I'm sure it will this season."

Carrick's still key

There's absolutely no doubt about it, Michael Carrick is still a top, top player, who will continue to prove a key member of the Manchester United side this season.

Ultimately, Carrick still offers so much to the cause and his leadership and presence in the midfield will help the club move up the table.

When fit, the veteran is still one of the most consistent and classiest midfield players in the division, so expect him to prove his credentials in the red shirt once again this season. With Carrick, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin, Van Gaal now has three great options in the middle of the park.
