Depay scored 28 goals in 40 appearances for PSV Eindhoven while playing from the wing last season, but has been deployed in a central role behind Wayne Rooney since arriving at Old Trafford this summer.
The 21-year-old looked sharp in pre-season, but struggled to make an impact on his Premier League debut against Tottenham last weekend.
Gullit feels Manchester United would see the best of Depay if Van Gaal found a space for him on the left flank, rather than in the No. 10 position.
“He plays his best football from the left,” the retired Netherlands international was quoted as saying by the Irish Times, “and now he’s behind the striker. If you want to get the best out of him, play him in his best position, but we have to see.”
Van Gaal could move Depay to the left
Van Gaal admitted earlier this week that Depay could be moved to the left wing if his latest experiment fails.
However, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach conceded much depends on the form of Manchester United’s current first-choice left winger Ashley Young. who was arguably the Red Devils’ best outfield player last season.
"It is a new position for [Depay] and he has to adapt to the new position because he is a goalscoring type,” Van Gaal was quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News. "But we have to wait and see if he can fulfil the demands of this position but that’s also because Ashley Young is playing very good on the left side.
"Therefore that is the circumstances now but it can change during the season. He can play in this position.”
Van Gaal is expected to persist with Depay behind Rooney for the time being, but if his performances fail to improve it won’t be much longer before he’s moved to either the left or right wing.
