The President of the University, Scott Scarborough, said the scholarship would cover tuition and all fees.
Students that complete the program would have to also graduate from a high school in the public school system of the city, achieve certain standardized test scores, and fulfil a community service requirement.
Scarborough said: “If you are one of LeBron’s kids … we want to tell you you have a college scholarship waiting for you at the University of Akron when you graduate from high school.
“What do you dream to be? Do you dream to be a teacher? A scientist? An engineer or a doctor? This college scholarship is your way to make that happen, and all because that man believes in you,” with a nod toward James.
James said: “This is one of the best things I’ve ever been a part of.”
James also announced the news on his own twitter account.
This is such a heart-warming gesture by the two-time NBA Champion, giving back to the community which he came from, and providing children and families a chance of relief from the high costs that come with trying to put a child through college.
