Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on the young defender and he could be seen as a cheaper alternative to Everton's John Stones.

Chelsea have been frustrated in their chase of Stones and appear to be taking their interest elsewhere after Roberto Martinez's claim the 21-year-old was not for sale.

Chelsea currently have three first-team central defender on their books in John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma, so a move for Rudiger would provide them with more than enough cover.

The Blues will be hoping to improve on their poor opening day performance when they travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City on Sunday.

The draw to Swansea coupled with poor performances in pre-season and a lack of new additions seems to have led to a flat atmosphere around Stamford Bridge.

A good performances in Manchester will go some way to arresting slight concerns from Chelsea fans. The imminent arrival of Baba Rahman from Augsburg, plus some more new additions could add a much needed boost to the London club.
