Liverpool are considering making a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi this summer, having seen Los Blancos beat them to the punch with regards to Mateo Kovacic.
Reports this morning detail how Real have won the race for Kovacic and will pay around €35million to sign him from Inter Milan.
This leaves Brendan Rodgers still wanting a midfielder, and Illarramendi has been on the Anfield radar for some time.

As a result, Mundo Deportivo - kindly relayed by talkSPORT - say that Liverpool are weighing up whether or not to try and land him in the coming weeks, with Brendan Rodgers confident he can convince the ex-Real Sociedad man to transfer to Merseyside.
It’s thought that at this moment in time the likelihood is that he will return to Sociedad, but if Liverpool come in with a big offer then Real may be more inclined to treat with him.
Rafael Benitez has obvious connections to the Reds from his time as manager there, and may prefer to offload Illarra to another league.
In any case no firm decision has been made either way, with Liverpool seemingly waiting to see what Illarramendi decides to do with his future before opting whether or not to make an offer for him.
The 25-year-old will certainly be considering his options ahead of a campaign wherein he’ll now be fourth choice midfielder. Luka Modric and Toni Kroos were already ahead of him in the pecking order, with Kovacic’s arrival set to relegate him further.
It might yet well be a common case of what is surplus to requirements at Real could be of vital importance to another club.
With Liverpool potentially getting ready to part ways with Lucas Leiva they need bodies in the midfield, and Illarra could well be the ideal candidate to fill the void.
Liverpool fans, should Brendan Rodgers make an offer for the Spaniard? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
