Premier League side Liverpool are on the verge of sealing their eighth signing of the summer after landing the likes of Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino.
Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi is poised to move from the Spanish capital to Liverpool for a fee of £15million, according to Daily Telegraph. Illarramendi joined Madrid from La Liga outfit Real Sociedad in 2013 for €32 million but failed to cement a regular first-team place under manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Benitez too not helpful
The arrival of Rafael Benitez has also not been fruitful as the 25-year-old has been told that he is viewed as a back-up to Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Metro reports Real Madrid are now ready to listen to offers for the Spaniard to end his two year struggle at Santiago Bernabeu.
More first team action
Steven Gerrard left the Premier League for MLS and Lucas Leiva is set to quit Anfield after nine years for Serie A move with AC Milan and Juventus interested according to talkSPORT, and Brendan Rodgers views Illarramendi as the ideal replacement for the Brazilian.
Widely tipped to be the successor of Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid, Illarramendi had limited opportunities during his entire Madrid spell. Although he made 59 league appearances for Los Blancos in his two years’ stay, he was majorly used as a substitute and was way down the pecking order in his manager’s view.
Talented prodigy of Real Sociedad
A bright prospect at Real Sociedad, the Spanish midfielder would like to reignite his career and a move to the Merseyside club would be perfect to realise that dream.
WhoScored.com claim Illarramendi’s key strengths include :Passing, through ball, tackling and blocking the ball. A robust tackler by nature, the Spanish star had a pass completion rate over 95% in the UEFA Champions League last season in the absence of Luka Modric.
Brendon Rodgers believe he is the player best suited for Liverpool mould and would add quality and dynamics to the roster at Anfield.
