Gerard Pique faces lengthy ban

Published 7 Comments

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique faces a ban of up to 12 games after being sent-off against Athletic Club in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup last night.

This has been reported by the Mirror, who claim that the Spanish international stunned the linesman last night by screaming "I s*** on your w**** of a mother" after the assistant failed to produce the flag over a close offside decision.

It appears, then, that Pique could face a lengthy spell out on the sidelines, with the LFP recognising abuse towards officials as a serious offence.

However, with the same report claiming that last night was Pique's first offence in terms of abusing the officials, he may only face a four-game sanction.

One thing's for sure, the LFP have a big decision to make, with the Barcelona man likely to miss between four and 12 games at the start of this campaign.

Bouncing back

And it was certainly a disappointing night for the Catalans who failed to overturn the 4-0 deficit at the hands of Athletic. Ultimately, Luis Enrique's side only managed a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp, which saw Athletic claim their first trophy in 31 years.

But it would be foolish to overlook Barcelona as the favourites to retain their La Liga title this term. Ok, they may well have defensive issues, but they still possess one of the most formidable attacking forces in world football.

In Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, the Catalans have arguably the most dynamic and brilliant attacks in the world, so they will take some stopping. The opening La Liga game between Barcelona and Athletic Club will certainly be an interesting spectacle as the two sides clash once again.
