The MMA world can hardly believe it’s collective eyes this week after the fallout of one of the most bizarre NSAC hearings in history.
What makes the story all the more bizarre besides Anderson Silva’s defence against his steroid related suspension is that the whole thing aired live on UFC Fight Pass. So the MMA world could tune in and watch the comedic event unfold.
What enfolded during the questioning which took well over an hour, can only be described as a circus. The Spider’s main defence for the anabolic steroid found in his system was that he had taken a different kind of ‘performance enhancing drug’.

He intimated that the drug was a sexual performance drug which he procured from a guy who he had trained with a few times from Thailand. He for some reason had come to trust this man.
The case went on with several puns on offer throughout the discussion. When asked to explain why an athlete would consume an unknown substance supposedly to aid sexual performance so close to a fight, his response was, ‘I didn’t think it would come up’. This was followed by commissioner Anthony Marnell who stated “We’re just playing games. And that’s my frustration at all this soft testimony.”
The icing on the cake was the musical interferences, through the anonymous private phone line designed for witnesses and testimonies.
The audience were treated to ‘Let’s talk about Sex’ by Salt N’ Peppa and ‘It wasn’t me’ by Shaggy among other gems throughout the questioning. It truly was a spectacle. Perhaps the UFC will start charging a PPV price for future hearings.
The outcome for Silva? A 12 month suspension retroactive to the 31st of January ‘14, a $380,000 fine and the win has been overturned to a no contest.
All jokes aside it was a dark day for MMA. Particularly as Silva was touted as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). So who is the GOAT now?
